Driveways & block paving

It is what is underneath that counts

Every driveway starts with a proper look at the ground. We then excavate to the depth your site needs and put down a minimum of 150mm of compacted hardcore, the step that stops a drive moving or sinking once it is in use.

Only then do the blocks go down, in whichever pattern you have chosen. Block paving is hard-wearing, easy to look after and, if a block is ever damaged, it can be lifted and replaced on its own.

Designed around your home

With so many blocks, colours and laying patterns to choose from, the possibilities really are wide open. We will show you a range of designs, from a classic herringbone to contrasting borders and bands, and match them to your property so the finished drive looks as if it belongs.

Alongside block paving we can also talk you through resin-bound and natural stone finishes if you would like to compare options.

Under the surface

How we build a block paved drive

The finish is what you see; the layers underneath are what make it last. This is exactly what goes in, in the order we lay it.

Blocks in your chosen pattern Built from the bottom up
  1. 1 Excavated ground Dug to suit your site

We inspect the ground first, then dig out to the depth your particular site needs.

  2. 2 Compacted hardcore 150mm minimum

Never less than 150mm. This is what stops a drive moving or sinking once cars are on it.

  3. 3 Laying course

A level bed for the blocks to sit in, so the finished surface runs true.

  4. 4 Block paving

Laid in the colour and pattern you pick, whether herringbone, borders, bands or something more personal.

What our customers say

STL is rated 5.0 out of 5 on Google. Here is what homeowners say about working with Sean and the team.

I had STL install me a new block drive at my old property which is still looking immaculate, therefore I recommended them to my mother in law where Sean and his team transformed her drive and garden to the highest of quality. From block paving on the drive and entrance alley, to artificial grass and decking throughout the back garden, with pergola and a decking walkway with rope handrail to finish.

I wouldn't go to anyone else but Sean for outside work! He's done two patios & a driveway for me and absolutely thrilled with everything. Sean & the lads always do a quality job, excellent value for money, and lovely guys too!

STL installed my double driveway over 2 years ago. Still in perfect condition, recommended to many friends and family. A very reliable team.

Used this company for both my full reno’s and both times the work has been absolutely perfect… always on time, always politely spoken and always a perfect finish on the jobs. Highly recommended by myself.

Gavin R. Google review

We recently had our garden completely transformed by Sean & his team and the results have exceeded all expectations. From the very first consultation Sean listened carefully to our ideas and offered his suggestions on what he thought would look best… The final outcome is even better than we ever expected.

Ellie K. Google review

Highly recommended. Sean and co. have just finished laying our patio and we are so pleased with the result. Nothing is too much trouble… They have kept us informed all the while and cleaned up as they went along.

FAQs

Driveways questions

Can’t see your question here? Give us a call, as we are always happy to talk things through.

Why does the base matter so much?

Almost every sunken or rutted driveway comes down to a poor base. We never put down less than 150mm of compacted hardcore, dug to suit your ground, so your drive stays level under the weight of cars.

Can block paving be repaired if it gets damaged?

Yes, that is one of its big advantages. Individual blocks can be lifted and replaced without disturbing the rest of the drive.

Do you do other driveway finishes?

Block paving is our most popular driveway, and we can also talk you through resin-bound and natural stone options at your free quote.
