Sleeper beds & walls
Structure, levels and character
Sleeper beds and walls are one of the easiest ways to give a garden shape. They hold back soil on sloping plots, lift planting to a comfortable height and create steps, edges and seats with real presence. Choose pine for a cleaner, modern look or oak for something more rustic.
Built properly, so they stay put
Preparation is everything with sleepers. Ours are fixed to 4×4 posts concreted at least 600mm into the ground, spaced roughly a metre apart and joined with heavy-duty timber lock bolts for strength.
All of our timber is pressure-treated, and wherever a sleeper sits against soil we add a polythene backing to keep damp and rot at bay.

How we build a sleeper wall
The finish is what you see; the layers underneath are what make it last. This is exactly what goes in, in the order we lay it.
- 1 4×4 posts, concreted in 600mm deep · ~1m apart
Posts go at least 600mm into the ground, set in concrete roughly a metre apart.
- 2 Polythene backing
Added behind any sleeper that touches soil, to keep damp and rot away.
- 3 Heavy-duty timber lock bolts
Every sleeper is bolted to its posts for extra strength.
- 4 Pressure-treated sleepers
Pine or oak, chosen for the look you want, from crisp and modern to rustic.

What our customers say
STL is rated 5.0 out of 5 on Google. Here is what homeowners say about working with Sean and the team.
Sean and his staff replaced our old patio with a wider one, gave us a new step and built 2 wooden raised beds. Very pleased with the final result. Good communication throughout, always polite and happy to respond to any issues or change requests.
Very happy with the work the team did - shed base, sleeper beds, path, patio extension and digging a pond. Garden transformation and very hardworking guys who also have fun!
We recently had our garden completely transformed by Sean & his team and the results have exceeded all expectations. From the very first consultation Sean listened carefully to our ideas and offered his suggestions on what he thought would look best… The final outcome is even better than we ever expected.
Highly recommended. Sean and co. have just finished laying our patio and we are so pleased with the result. Nothing is too much trouble… They have kept us informed all the while and cleaned up as they went along.
I had STL install me a new block drive at my old property which is still looking immaculate, therefore I recommended them to my mother in law where Sean and his team transformed her drive and garden to the highest of quality. From block paving on the drive and entrance alley, to artificial grass and decking throughout the back garden, with pergola and a decking walkway with rope handrail to finish.
Brilliant work and fantastic service! Sean transformed my garden by replacing the decking with a patio, the rotting sleepers with walls and large unruly hedge with a neat fence. It's given me loads more usable space in the garden and I can now see out of my kitchen window.
FAQs
Sleepers questions
Can’t see your question here? Give us a call, as we are always happy to talk things through.
07717 216377 Pine or oak sleepers, which should I choose?
Pine gives a cleaner, more contemporary look and is kinder on the budget; oak has a heavier, rustic character. Both are pressure-treated and built the same way.
Can sleepers hold back a slope?
Yes. Sleeper retaining walls are ideal for sloping gardens. We concrete the posts at least 600mm deep and bolt every sleeper to them so the wall stays solid.
Will the sleepers rot where they touch the soil?
We use pressure-treated timber and add a polythene backing wherever a sleeper is in contact with soil, to protect it from damp.
