Under the surface
The bit you never see is the bit that lasts
Anyone can make a garden look good for a week. What keeps it looking good for years is the groundwork underneath. Here is exactly what goes in, in the order we lay it.
- 1 Excavated ground Dug to suit your site
We inspect the ground first, then dig out to the depth your particular site needs.
- 2 Compacted hardcore 150mm minimum
Never less than 150mm. This is what stops a drive moving or sinking once cars are on it.
- 3 Laying course
A level bed for the blocks to sit in, so the finished surface runs true.
- 4 Block paving
Laid in the colour and pattern you pick, whether herringbone, borders, bands or something more personal.
- 1 Excavation 150mm
The old ground is dug out 150mm deep before anything goes back in.
- 2 Hardcore base
Compacted with a roller to give a solid, free-draining foundation.
- 3 Washed sand 25mm
Compacted and screeded to the exact level you want.
- 4 Weed membrane
Stops weeds pushing through from below, so there are no bumps, no creases and no surprises.
- 5 Artificial grass
Rolled out, cut to fit and fixed to a concrete edge around the perimeter so it cannot lift or creep.
- 1 Dug or rotovated 150mm+
The ground is broken up at least 150mm deep so new roots have somewhere to go.
- 2 Improved topsoil
Topped up with good-quality soil, firmed and levelled to the right gradient.
- 3 Pre-fertiliser
Added before the turf goes down to help the roots take quickly.
- 4 Fresh turf
Rolled out over the prepared ground, with aftercare advice so it stays green all year.
- 1 4×4 posts, concreted in 600mm deep · ~1m apart
Posts go at least 600mm into the ground, set in concrete roughly a metre apart.
- 2 Polythene backing
Added behind any sleeper that touches soil, to keep damp and rot away.
- 3 Heavy-duty timber lock bolts
Every sleeper is bolted to its posts for extra strength.
- 4 Pressure-treated sleepers
Pine or oak, chosen for the look you want, from crisp and modern to rustic.
